  • What is Counseling?
    • ​Counseling is a form of 'talk therapy'. It is a process where an individual, couple or family meet with a trained professional counsellor to talk about issues and problems that they are facing in their lives.

  • How does counseling (or therapy) sessions work?
    • It is a collaborative effort between you and the counselor, providing opportunities to get to know one another to talk about the issues brought up. We tailor therapy to your specific needs.

  • Who is eligible?
    • According to the National Institute of Mental Health, people seek out therapy for major life stressors (like a tough job, the loss of a loved one, or relationship issues) or symptoms that can't be explained by some other condition (like low energy, irritability, or changes in sleep or appetite).​ Contact our Counseling Department to determine if counseling is for you.

  • Do I need a referral from a doctor?
    • ​A referral isn't usually required to see a therapist, but a referral from a medical doctor may be necessary if you want your insurance provider to cover the visit.

  • What documents do I need for my first visit? While waiting, you will likely fill out some paperwork, including:
    • HIPPA forms
    • Insurance information
    • Medical history, including your current medications
    • A questionnaire about your symptoms
    • Record release form
    • Therapist-patient services agreement

  • What is an LPC-Associate?
    • LPC-Associates are temporarily licensed professional counselors. They have at least a master’s degree in counseling or related field, have completed extensive supervised field practicum, and have successfully passed the National Counselor Exam (NCE). LPC-Associates can practice psychotherapy under a Texas Board-Approved supervisor.

  • What is a Graduate Student Intern?
    • Practicum students are finishing their master’s degree program in counseling, psychology, or social work, and are now fulfilling hours of face-to-face counseling required by their degree program. Practicum students counsel under the close supervision of his/her department chair and treatment Director at Sunny Glen Children’s Home.
