  • What is Counseling?
    • Counseling is a form of 'talk therapy'. It is a process where an individual, couple or family meet with a trained professional counsellor to talk about issues and problems that they are facing in their lives.
  • How does counseling (or therapy) sessions work?
    • It is a collaborative effort between you and the counselor, providing opportunities to get to know one another to talk about the issues brought up. We tailor therapy to your specific needs.
  • Who is eligible?
    • According to the National Institute of Mental Health, people seek out therapy for major life stressors (like a tough job, the loss of a loved one, or relationship issues) or symptoms that can't be explained by some other condition (like low energy, irritability, or changes in sleep or appetite).Contact our Counseling Department to determine if counseling is for you.
  • Do I need a referral from a doctor?
    • A referral isn't usually required to see a therapist, but a referral from a medical doctor may be necessary if you want your insurance provider to cover the visit.
  • What documents do I need for my first visit? While waiting, you will likely fill out some paperwork, including:
    • HIPPA forms
    • Insurance information
    • Medical history, including your current medications
    • A questionnaire about your symptoms
    • Record release form
    • Therapist-patient services agreement
  • What is an LPC-Associate?
    • LPC-Associates are temporarily licensed professional counselors. They have at least a master’s degree in counseling or related field, have completed extensive supervised field practicum, and have successfully passed the National Counselor Exam (NCE). LPC-Associates can practice psychotherapy under a Texas Board-Approved supervisor.
  • What is a Graduate Student Intern?
    • Practicum students are finishing their master’s degree program in counseling, psychology, or social work, and are now fulfilling hours of face-to-face counseling required by their degree program.
